CAT Application Process 2025: Selection of Test Cities

It is mandatory for candidates to choose test cities of their preference while filling out the CAT 2025 Registration Form. Candidates can select up to five test cities from the list of 170 cities. However, the exam centre allotment will be based on the availability of seats at the centre. Also, the allotment is done on a first-come, first-served basis. Hence, the sooner candidates complete the application form, the higher the chances of getting their preferred test city. The details of the exam centre and the reporting time will be mentioned in the CAT Admit Card 2025. It will be issued on 5th November. Suppose candidates wish to change their choice of exam centre after submitting the application form. In that case, they can do so when the CAT conducting authorities activate the application correction link. Once the admit cards are made public, there will be no chance to change the test city preference. Hence, while filling out the application form, candidates should be very careful about their choices, and it is suggested to give the first preference to their home city always.

CAT 2025 Results Out? Here’s What to Do Next

After the declaration of CAT 2025 results, the IIMs will soon start shortlisting candidates for the Written Ability Test (WAT) and Personal Interview (PI) rounds. Last year, IIMs released the MBA/PGP shortlists in January, conducted PI rounds during March and April, and announced final admission results in May. Each IIM keeps its minimum CAT cutoff, and candidates who meet these cutoffs will be invited to the next stage. Candidates will need to submit an online PI shortlist form on the official websites of the IIMs they opted for in their CAT application. This form must be submitted before the deadline to be considered for the interview rounds. The shortlisting process is based on candidates’ CAT 2025 score and past academic records (Class 10 and 12 marks). Here is a list of factors based on which the final selection for the 2025-2027 MBA/PGP batch depends:

    • CAT 2025 score
    • Academic history
    • Work experience (if any)
    • Academic diversity
    • Gender diversity
    • Performance in WAT/PI rounds

The IIM admission process generally has the following three stages:

    1. Screening based on CAT score and academic records
    2. Written Ability Test and Personal Interview (WAT/PI)
    3. Final admission selection

Also, candidates need to note that while top IIMs conduct admissions individually, nine new or baby IIMs follow a Common Admission Process (CAP) for WAT/PI rounds.

Other Top B-Schools MBA Admission Through CAT 2025

Apart from the IIMs, various leading and reputed B-Schools like FMS, SPJIMR, MDI, IMT, and others also consider CAT scores for MBA admissions. These institutes also shortlist candidates for WAT and PI rounds based on their individual CAT cutoffs. Here is a list of top Non-IIM MBA Colleges accepting CAT 2025 Score:

Marking Scheme of CAT Answer Key 2025

CAT examination employs a scaled marking system, where candidates are assigned percentiles based on their scores. For every correct answer, CAT awards three marks (MCQs and Non-MCQs) and deducts one mark for wrong MCQ answers. No marks are deducted for unattempted questions and wrong non-MCQ answers. Here is how candidates can use the CAT answer key to calculate scores and how it relates to percentiles:

    Calculating Score

    • For 30 correct answers, the CAT score would be 30 x 3 = 90 marks.
    • If there are 10 wrong answers, deduct 10 x 1 = 10 marks.
    • Deduct the wrong answer score from the correct answer score to arrive at the raw score: 90 - 10 = 80 marks.
    • The IIMs take the raw score and normalise it to ensure candidates from all three slots are assessed on the same level.
    • The normalised scores are then used to arrive at the percentile.

    Score vs. Percentile

MBA course admissions are made based on the percentile. The raw scores are used to determine the percentiles by comparing a candidate’s score against the scores of all other CAT candidates. This means that candidates need to perform well and outperform their peers. Attempting 30-35 questions with an accuracy rate over 80% will likely result in a score in the 99th percentile for CAT 2025. For reference, the table below lists the estimated CAT 2024 score and corresponding percentile.

    CAT 2024 Percentile & Slot-wise Score Range

    Percentile Slot 3 Slot 2 Slot 1
    99 90–92 87–89 90–92
    95 68–70 65–67 68–70
    90 56–58 53–55 56–58
    85 47–49 44–46 47–49
    80 41–43 38–40 41–43

This article gives a detailed look at what to expect based on recent trends, covering everything from the section-wise difficulty and safe attempt ranges to score vs percentile estimates and cutoff predictions for top IIMs. Insights from CAT 2024 have also been added to give readers a better idea of how each slot played out last year. Whether you're targeting a 99+ percentile or aiming for consistent sectionals, this breakdown is meant to help you prepare smarter. The goal here is simple: bring you the most relevant analysis, minus the guesswork.

CAT Exam Analysis 2025: Exam Pattern

CAT 2025 is likely to be held in three shifts on a single day, just like last year. The paper will be split into three sections, and each one will be timed separately. You won’t be able to move between sections during the exam. The total number of questions is likely to stay 68, as seen in recent years of the CAT exam. All three sections (VARC, DILR & QA) are expected to have a mix of multiple choice questions and Type in the answer questions. Candidates will get 40 minutes per section, and will not be allowed to switch sections once the timer starts. Candidates will be awarded +3 marks for each correct answer, and -1 mark will be deducted for every incorrect answer in Multiple choice section; there will be no negative marking for Type in the answer questions.

    CAT 2025 Exam Pattern (Section-wise)

Section Number of Questions Time Limit Total Marks Question Type
VARC (Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension) 24 40 minutes 72 MCQs + TITA
DILR (Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning) 22 40 minutes 66 MCQs + TITA
QA (Quantitative Aptitude) 22 40 minutes 66 MCQs + TITA
    Total 68 120 minutes 204 -

Based on the past trends, Type in the Answer questions in VARC and Quant may be on the tougher side. DILR is expected to remain time-consuming, even if the number of sets stays the same.

    Slot-Wise CAT 2025 Exam Analysis

CAT 2024 exam was held in three different time slots on the same day: morning, afternoon, and evening. While the basic structure of the test remained unchanged across these sessions, students pointed out noticeable differences in difficulty and the types of questions asked. CAT 2024 came as a surprise for many. With para-jumbles missing entirely and a friendlier Quant section, the paper felt more balanced than the previous year. Slot 1 was clearly the most approachable overall. Slot 2 gave a middle-ground experience, while Slot 3 added some pressure, especially in reading comprehension. The structure of the exam hasn’t changed drastically, but the tweaks in question difficulty across slots might have a subtle impact on normalisation. For serious test-takers, the 2024 edition of CAT rewarded smart prep, calm execution, and a sharp eye for detail.

Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension (VACR) Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (DILR) Quantitative Ability (QA)
    Slot 1: Morning Shift
Test-takers found this section to be on the easier side. One interesting shift this year was the complete absence of para-jumble questions, which used to be a standard feature. Reading comprehension passages were direct and didn’t require multiple re-reads. Candidates managed to navigate this section with more ease than usual. Most of the sets were familiar in nature, which gave students a confidence boost and allowed for better time management. Questions in Quant weren’t as tricky or time-consuming as expected. Those who were comfortable with basic formulas and arithmetic had a smoother run through this section.
    Slot 2: Afternoon Shift
This section stayed consistent with what students saw in the morning. The structure remained unchanged and there were still no para-jumbles. Most test-takers were able to attempt a decent number of questions. The logic-based sets felt a little easier than what candidates remembered from CAT 2023. While the section still demanded focus, it didn’t include unusually complex sets that derail time plans. While not as straightforward as in the morning session, Quant in Slot 2 was still fair. Students who had a good hold on foundational concepts managed a solid number of attempts with accuracy
    Slot 3: Evening Shift
Students found this section a notch tougher than earlier slots. The reading passages were slightly longer and more abstract, requiring careful interpretation. Still no para-jumbles, but the question framing was more subtle. The sets in this slot were more layered and took extra time to understand. Though not unreasonably difficult, they weren’t as straightforward as those in the earlier slots, leading to lower attempt rates. Surprisingly, many candidates felt this section was a breather. The questions were mostly based on standard concepts and didn't demand complex logic or multiple steps, making it a scoring opportunity for many.

Difficulty Level Comparison of the CAT 2025 Exam

CAT 2024 exam was conducted in three separate slots, and while the overall structure remained consistent, many students noticed slight shifts in difficulty. This slot-wise comparison helps understand how each section performed across sessions, giving future aspirants a clearer picture of what to expect and how to plan their attempts accordingly.

CAT 2024 Section-wise Difficulty (Slot Comparison)

    Section Slot 1 Slot 2 Slot 3
Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension (VARC) Easy to Moderate Easy to Moderate Moderate to Tough
Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning (DILR) Easy to Moderate Easy to Moderate Moderate
Quantitative Ability (QA) Easy to Moderate Moderate Moderate to Easy

    Section-Wise CAT 2025 Analysis

The following table presents a structured analysis of each section in CAT 2024, including the number of questions, observed difficulty level, section-specific highlights, and the range of good attempts as reported across all three slots.

    CAT 2024 Section-Wise Analysis

Section Number of Questions Difficulty Level Good Attempt Range Highlights
Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension (VARC) 24
    (22 MCQs + 2 TITA)
Moderate across all three slots 17 - 18 - No para-jumble questions were asked in any slot.
    - RC passages were of moderate length, based on behavioural economics, cultural studies, and technology.
    - Question format and level remained consistent across all shifts.
Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (DILR) 22
(across 5 sets, varying from 4 to 5 questions each)
Easy to Moderate 12 - 13 - Each slot featured 5 sets, some with 4 questions, others with 5.
    - Slot 1 and Slot 2 were more manageable than previous years.
    - Slot 3 showed a slight increase in complexity but was solvable.
    - Set selection and time management were crucial.
Quantitative Ability (QA) 22 Moderate overall
    (Slot 3 slightly easier)
    13 - 15 - Considered more accessible than CAT 2023.
    - Focused on arithmetic, with occasional algebra & geometry.
    - Many candidates reported Slot 3 as more favorable.

CAT 2025 Score vs Percentile Estimate

Although CAT 2025 is yet to be conducted, previous year trends provide a helpful reference for estimating the raw scores required to achieve specific percentile brackets. These estimates serve as a benchmark for aspirants during preparation and mock tests, allowing them to set realistic performance goals.

Overall Percentile Estimated Raw Score (out of 198)
    99.9 110-115
    99 95-100
    95 75-80
    90 65-70
    85 55-60
    80 48-52

These estimates assume that CAT 2025 will follow the same pattern as last year, 66 questions, 198 marks. Since the exam happens in multiple slots, raw scores are normalised to account for difficulty differences. Top IIMs also look at section-wise scores, so balanced performance across VARC, DILR, and QA is important. Lastly, accuracy matters more than high attempts, especially due to negative marking.

    CAT 2025 Cutoff Expectations

Getting a call from an IIM depends on more than just your total score. Each IIM has its own cutoff based on category and past trends. Below is a rough idea of the expected overall percentile cutoffs for CAT 2025, based on how things looked in previous years.

Institute General OBC SC ST PwD
    IIM Ahmedabad 99+ 95+ 80+ 75+ 70+
    IIM Bangalore 98.5+ 94+ 80+ 75+ 70+

    IIM Udaipur 92+ 85+ 70+ 60+ 60+
    IIM Trichy 92+ 85+ 70+ 60+ 60+

    What Happens After CAT 2025?

After the CAT 2025 result is out, there is no single central counselling. Instead, each IIM and other top colleges carry out their own admission process. However, most of them follow similar steps, starting from shortlisting to final selection. Here’s a clear breakdown of how it generally works:

    1. Shortlisting for WAT/PI

Based on the CAT score, academic background, work experience, and diversity, institutes prepare a list of shortlisted candidates. Some newer IIMs take part in the Common Admission Process (CAP), where WAT and PI are held together for all such IIMs. CAP 2025 was led by IIM Bodh Gaya.

    2. Written Ability Test (WAT)

This is a short essay round. Candidates are asked to write on general or abstract topics. Some IIMs may skip this step and directly go for interviews.

    3. Personal Interview (PI)

In this round, candidates speak with a panel. The interview tests confidence, goals, speaking ability, and clarity of thought. It plays a big role in the final selection.

    4. Final Score Calculation

Every institute uses its own formula. They give different weight to CAT marks, WAT/PI scores, academics, and profile (like work experience or gender diversity). All of this adds up to a final score.

    5. Offer Letter Announcement

After checking everyone’s final scores, institutes release their admission list. Selected candidates receive emails or can check the result on the official website.

    6. Accepting a Seat

Those who get an offer must confirm it by paying a seat acceptance fee. If they got offers from CAP IIMs, they can use the CAP portal to pick one. Only one seat can be accepted.

    7. Admission and Document Check

After accepting a seat, students need to submit their original documents and pay the course fee. Once everything is verified, the admission is confirmed. Some colleges allow refund or withdrawals under fixed deadlines.

    Preparation Approach:

    • VARC: Emphasize regular reading practice, comprehension skills, and vocabulary enhancement.
    • DILR: Practice a wide variety of puzzles and data problems to build speed and accuracy.
    • QA: Focus on conceptual clarity in fundamentals, especially in arithmetic, and solve topic-wise question sets.

    CAT 202025 Section-Wise Preparation Strategy

CAT 2025 preparation requires a little different approach for each section, and it helps to understand what each demands before you plan your study routine.

    • For Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension (VARC), it’s advisable to start early since it carries around 34% weightage, and building a reading habit might take time. If you already read regularly, you might only need to focus on practising reading comprehension passages. But if reading isn’t something you enjoy yet, begin with short articles, editorials, and gradually move on to different types of books and novels. Since RCs make up about 70% of the VARC section, as 16-18 questions are RC-based, getting comfortable with various passage types and difficulty levels will help you manage time and accuracy during the exam.
    • The second section, Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (DILR), tests how well candidates can handle data in the form of charts, graphs, and tables and holds around 30-32% weightage in CAT. It requires comfort with quick and accurate calculations, so it helps to brush up on basic maths and calculation speed. Since questions come in sets, choosing the right set to attempt can save time and help you maximise your score. For Logical Reasoning, the key is to develop the ability to understand and break down patterns and puzzles. There are no formulas here, so practice is your best tool. Try taking sectional, time-bound mock tests to improve your speed and selection strategy in DILR.
    • The third and last section, Quantitative Aptitude, is all about candidates’ comfort with maths. If you’re already strong in maths, regular practice will keep you sharp. If you need to build your basics, it’s recommended to revise Class 9 and 10 NCERT Maths to understand the basic concepts in algebra, geometry, and arithmetic before moving to advanced-level problems. Since many questions in the QA section come from arithmetic (35-40%) and algebra (25-30%), make sure these areas are strong while also practising a wide range of problems from past papers and sample questions.

CAT 2025 Study Plan and Timetable

CAT 2025 preparation requires a balanced approach that suits your daily routine while keeping your progress consistent. Here are a few tips on how one can approach CAT 2025 strategically:

    • Start Early: If you’re starting now, aim for 2 to 3 hours of focused study daily, increasing gradually as the exam approaches.
    • Focus on Basics First: Spend the first 2 to 3 months working on your basics in Quant, practicing RCs regularly, and getting comfortable with DI sets.
    • Set Weekly Targets: Plan your week with clear goals, like completing a chapter, solving a set number of RCs, or taking one sectional test.
    • Include Mock Tests: From the fourth month, start taking one mock test every two weeks, analysing your mistakes carefully. Increase the frequency to once a week, closer to the exam.
    • Balance All Sections: Don’t ignore any section. Allocate time for VARC, DILR, and QA on different days or split them within your study slots.
    • Revision is Key: Keep one day each week for revision to revisit weak areas and consolidate what you have learned.
    • Personalise according to needs: Adjust your plan if you find certain areas need more attention or if you’re taking longer to understand a topic.

CAT 2025 Preparation: Common Mistakes to Avoid

While preparing for CAT 2025, many candidates tend to make small mistakes that can affect their scores later. Here are a few things for the candidates to keep in mind to prepare better and avoid these common mistakes:

    • Starting too late: Begin your preparation early to understand basic concepts properly and avoid last-minute stress.
    • Ignoring basics: Don’t skip strengthening your basics before moving to advanced questions and mocks.
    • Skipping regular revision: Without proper revisions, it’s difficult to remember concepts and maintain accuracy under exam pressure.
    • Neglecting mock tests: Mock tests and their analysis are essential to improve speed, identify weak areas, and adjust strategies.
    • Incomplete syllabus coverage: Avoid skipping tough topics, as every section can impact your overall score.

CAT Counselling Process 2025: The admission process for IIMs and other top B-schools through CAT 2025 is expected to begin shortly after the CAT 2025 Results are announced in January 2026. Shortlisting for the WAT and PI rounds is expected to start in January 2026 and continue through February. To take part in the CAT 2025 admission process, you need more than just a decent score. Each IIM and B-school has its own way of filtering candidates, but the basic rules remain the same across the board. To get into top IIMs or B-schools through CAT 2025, you need to meet a few basic conditions. These include your academic background, CAT score, and any institute-specific rules like work experience or past grades. Everything else, like interviews or written tests, comes after these basic checks.

    Criteria Details
Educational Qualification A Bachelor’s degree from a recognised university or institution. Final-year students can also apply, but their admission is provisional until proof of graduation is submitted.
Minimum Marks Required General/EWS/OBC: Minimum 50% marks (or equivalent CGPA) in graduation.
    SC/ST/PwD: Minimum 45% marks.
Valid CAT 2025 Score You must have appeared for CAT 2025 and received a valid percentile to be shortlisted by any participating institute.
Additional Institute-Specific Criteria Some IIMs and B-schools may consider 10th, 12th, and graduation scores, along with work experience, for shortlisting. Weightage given to each component varies across institutes.
Age Limit There is no upper age limit to apply for CAT or its counselling process.
Nationality Indian citizens can apply. NRIs and foreign nationals can apply through separate admission routes (GMAT + separate application).

Note: Qualifying CAT doesn’t guarantee admission. Candidates still need to go through further shortlisting rounds and meet each college’s cut-off and criteria.

CAT Counselling Process 2025: Step-by-Step Process

Some colleges allow refund or withdrawal under fixed deadlines.

Non-IIM Admission Process Through CAT 2025

CAT scores are used by many top colleges other than IIMs. These include well-known institutes like FMS Delhi, MDI Gurgaon, IITs, IMT Ghaziabad, and several others that offer MBA or PGDM courses. While the overall process is somewhat like IIMs, there are a few key differences. Here's how admissions usually work at non-IIM B-schools.

    1. Apply to Colleges

Students have to apply separately to each non-IIM institute. Applications usually open soon after the CAT exam and continue till Jan or Feb 2026.

    2. Shortlisting Candidates

Once CAT results are out, colleges shortlist students based on their CAT score, past academics, work experience (if any), and profile.

    3. GD/WAT/PI Rounds

Shortlisted students are called for selection rounds. These may include Group Discussions (GD), a short essay (WAT), or a Personal Interview (PI). Some colleges may skip GD or WAT.

    4. Final List of Selected Students

Colleges prepare a final list by giving weightage to CAT score, interview round performance, and academic background. Some also consider work experience or gender diversity.

    5. Admission & Fee Payment

Selected students get admission offers through email or the college portal. To book the seat, students must pay the fee within the deadline.

Documents Required for CAT Counselling Process 2025

Once you receive an admission offer from an IIM or another institute through CAT 2025, you’ll need to verify your documents. Make sure to carry both originals and photocopies at the time of reporting.

CAT Counselling Cutoffs 2025: IIMs and Non-IIMs

To get into top IIMs or other B-schools through CAT 2025, candidates must clear the minimum cutoff scores set by each institute. These cutoffs change annually based on the difficulty of the exam, the number of applicants, and the number of available seats. There are usually two types of cutoffs. The first is the qualifying cutoff, which is the minimum score needed to be considered for the WAT-PI round. The second is the final cutoff, which is the actual score required to receive an admission offer after all selection rounds are done. The table below gives a general idea of past trends.

Tips to Improve Chances in the CAT Admission Process 2025

While your CAT score is important, it’s not the only thing that matters in the admission process. There are many small steps that can improve your overall chances of getting selected by an IIM or other top B-school. Some of the tips might help.

    • Balanced Scores Have Been Preferred: IIMs have not just considered total percentile, section-wise cutoffs also needed to be cleared. Even strong overall scores have been rejected if one section was too weak. So during mocks, balance across VARC, DILR, and QA has been practiced.
    • Academic Profile Has Been Considered: Class 10th, 12th, and graduation marks have carried weight during the admission process. Though past scores couldn’t be changed, students have improved their profiles by doing internships, online courses, or volunteering. Some colleges have given extra points for work experience or gender diversity.
    • WAT and PI Have Played a Big Role: A good CAT score has helped in shortlisting, but WAT and PI rounds have decided who got the final seat. Many students have practiced writing short essays and joined mock interviews to get comfortable speaking about their background, goals, and reasons for doing an MBA.
    • Documents Have Been Kept Ready: Issues during document submission have caused stress for some. To avoid delays, marksheets, ID proofs, and certificates have been arranged early. Final-year students have also collected their provisional degrees in advance.
    • Other Colleges Have Been Considered Too: Not getting into an IIM hasn’t been the end. Many top non-IIM institutes have offered excellent MBA programs. Students have kept backup options ready and applied widely to improve their chances.

CAT Counselling Process 2025 Reservation Policy

Every IIM keeps aside a certain number of seats for students from reserved categories, as per the rules made by the Government of India. This applies during the shortlisting as well as the final admission stage. Even with reservation, students still need to meet the basic CAT percentile and academic marks that each IIM asks for.

    Category Reservation Percentage
    Schedule Castes (SC) 15%
    Schedule Tribes (ST) 7.5%
    Other Backward Classes (NC-OBC) 27%
    Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) 10%
    PwD 5%

CAT Counselling Process 2025: Top Colleges Accepting CAT Scores 2025

CAT scores are accepted by many top colleges, not just the IIMs. While IIMs are the most popular choices, several well-known non-IIM B-schools also use CAT scores to shortlist students for MBA and PGDM courses. On one side are the IIMs, including the older, well-established ones and the newer institutes that are growing quickly. On the other side, many non-IIM colleges offer strong MBA programs, good placements, and active alumni networks.

For instance, for 30 correct answers, the score could be 30 x 3 = 90. Step 3: Calculate the number of wrong MCQ answers and multiply it by one. For instance, for 10 wrong answers, the score would be 10 x 1 = 10. Step 4: Deduct the wrong answer score from the correct answer score to arrive at the total raw score. From the example, 30 - 10 = 20. Step 5: Compare the total score with the previous year’s percentile figures to estimate the percentile.
